Community / Town hall Christmas tree taken down for safety reasons after gales
Sunday night’s NorthLink services are scheduled to operate but weather related delays can be expected
LERWICK Town Hall is looking slightly less festive after its outside Christmas tree was removed on safety grounds.
This came after a recent spell of windy weather.
A spokesperson for Shetland Islands Council said: “In recent gales, the Christmas tree at Lerwick Town Hall was dislodged and its lights damaged, and so a decision was taken to remove it for safety reasons.”
The tree was erected by the council just before the Living Lerwick Christmas parade in early December.
It was a gift from Kinn kommune in the county of Vestland, Norway.
Trees are also gifted from Norway to Scalloway and Whalsay.
Meanwhile the forecast for this weekend is for very wet and windy weather but Shetland remains the only area in Scotland with a yellow Meet Office warning. Tonight’s NorthLink service to Aberdeen has been cancelled while the northbound vessel will only call at Kirkwall and then return to Aberdeen.
Sunday night’s southbound sailing may be delayed by several hours to allow sea conditions to improve.
