Arts / Funding boost will help isles show take Flight next year
A DANCE piece inspired by the migratory patterns of birds – written and rehearsed in Shetland – has received a major funding boost.
Creative Scotland has provided £81,766 to help A Journey of Flight tour all across Scotland next year.
The funding will also cover the costs of touring performers and a technician to travel the country, along with a producer and marketing manager.
Kathryn Gordon, who is one of the two dancers along with Jorja Follina, was successful in a bid to secure the national funding after a 2022 performance of the show at Mareel.
The piece features original music composed by isles musician Jenny Sturgeon, with a live musician at every performance.
Performed in the round, A Journey of Flight is an immersive dance experience inspired by bird migration, focusing on arrivals and departures, nostalgia of place and the notion of flight.
The two dancers move in and around hanging white sheets with moving images on them, arriving in new places, new states of being, and making new homes in each.
Gordon said they would be rehearsing it here in Shetland, and plan to deliver outreach workshops prior to performances across the country.
She said venues and dates for next year’s tour have yet to be announced.
