Community / Large events hopes as security training scheme becomes fully booked

LARGE events in Shetland could become a little easier to organise after it was confirmed all 12 spaces on a security staff training scheme have been filled.

The training, set to take place in January, is fully funded and uses leftover money designated for the 2024 Tall Ships Races event in Lerwick.

It is being facilitated by local firm Réalta Events Management and run by Highland Training Services.

The company’s Emma Miller said there were 15 applications in total for the 12 spaces for Security Industry Authority (SIA) training.

“We were really pleased with all the applicants and would have given everyone a space if we could, but the trainer is only able to take 12 people at a time,” she said.

“All the applicants are looking forward to getting started and being able to help facilitate more events to take place in various venues going forward.”

There is a shortage of SIA-certified door staff in Shetland, which has contributed to a lack of standing concerts being held at Mareel in recent years.

Shetland Arts chief executive Graeme Howell told Shetland News it had held conversations with Miller about the training.

“We’re just looking forward to some badged SIA staff being available in Shetland and wanting to work,” he added.

A brochure issued during the application process for the new training scheme said there was demand for SIA-certified staff from venues like Mareel, the Clickimin and Trench.
