Nature / Crowdfunder launched to help complete documentary that will honour Jan Bevington’s life
A CROWDFUNDER has been launched to raise funds towards a film project that will honour the life of Jan Bevington, the founder of Hillswick Wildlife Sanctuary.
Jan died last month aged 77 following a long struggle with ill health.
Director of WildReach Productions, Matteo Clarke, said it had been a long-held aspiration of his to film a documentary that pays tribute to Jan and Pete Bevington and their unwavering commitment to protecting Shetland’s wildlife.
Sadly however, when he and his business partner, wildlife photographer Roman Willi, finally made it to Hillswick in summer last year, Jan was no longer able to fully participate in the filming.
Following Jan’s death in November this year the film project became “not only a tribute to her decades of dedication but also an urgent opportunity to honour her life’s work”, Clarke said.
Jan spent over 40 years rescuing wild animals and founded the internationally known sanctuary back in 1987, becoming the centre of international media attention during the Braer tanker collision in January 1993.
The sanctuary at the historic Booth in Hillswick has recently undergone a major refurbishment, securing its long-term future.
Clarke said: “Jan’s story has such deep roots in Shetland’s identity, and we believe it’s one that deserves to be shared widely.
“With stunning footage shot during our month-long stay with Jan and Pete, the film captures the heart of Shetland’s conservation efforts and the personal sacrifices made to ensure its future.”
However, as is often the case with small production companies, money is tight and additional funds are needed to get the ambitious Hillswick: Beyond the Tides project over the line.
WildReach Productions are inviting the many supporters of Hillswick Wildlife Sanctuary – in Shetland and further beyond – to help raise some of the necessary funds.

Shetland News has pledged an initial £500 towards the project to help it becoming a reality, but also to honour our long association with Pete who worked here at the newsdesk for 15 years.
Clarke said after filming had concluded the project is currently going into the post-production phase, including editing, music composition and distribution.
They hope to be able to submit the film to major film festivals by spring next year.
“We’re currently seeking support from local businesses, individuals, and organisations to help us complete the project,” Clarke said.
“While we already have some backing from local cafes, we still need to secure additional funding to finalise post-production and bring Jan’s story to international audiences.
“Hillswick: Beyond the Tides is more than just a YouTube video; it’s a professionally produced documentary with global reach. We are committed to making it a high-quality project that will be showcased at prominent film festivals around the world.
“Your contribution helps ensure the film’s success, bringing Shetland’s beauty and conservation efforts to a wider audience.”
The GoFundMe page can be found here.
Anyone interested in becoming a sponsor of the project who will be included in the end credits of the documentary is asked to contact Clarke directly via e-mail: matteo@wildreachproductions.com or phone 07539 432073.
