AN EXCELLENT turnout of 86 darts players entered the Shetland Open Singles competition at the Lerwick Legion on Saturday.

Players were looking to not only be crowned Shetland singles champion, but to pick up maximum inter-county points.

The first rounds produced some very competitive ties, with winners progressing and the losers of the preliminary and first rounds dropping into the plate competition.

In the main competition the quarter-finals were played over the best of seven legs, with Stuart Paul (Posties) beating Bar Fines’ Craig Main 4-3, Delting Boating Club’s Liam Sutherland defeating Tommy Williamson (Bar Stewards) 4-1, Roger Irvine of Whalsay beating Mirrie Dancers’ Richard Hughson and Aiden Couper (Posties) seeing off Ajax’s Clive Scott.

The semi-finals were played over the best of nine legs, and saw defending champion Sutherland progress to the final following a 5-1 victory over Paul. Irvine secured a 5-3 victory over Couper to join him in the final.

The final was played over the best of 11 legs and saw Irvine emerge a 6-2 winner to claim the Shetland men’s open singles 2024 title.

Running alongside the main open competition was the plate competition, which saw the 38 losers from the first rounds of the main draw compete against one another over the best of three legs up until the final.

The quarter-finals of the plate saw Marc Henry beat Euan Grogan 2-0, Iain Blance defeat Gary Devaney 2-1, Gareth MacRitchie beat Maurice Clark 2-0 and Ben Mayes knock out Brian McLeod 2-1.

The final was contested by MacRitchie and Henry after they beat Mayes and Blance respectively 2-1 in their semi-finals.

The final was played over the best of five legs and saw MacRitchie run out a 3-0 winner to win the Shetland open singles plate competition.

Moreland’s Brechin City side will host Edinburgh giants Hearts in the competition’s fourth round next month.

And the game has been picked to be broadcast live on BBC Scotland on Friday 17 January.

It is their reward for knocking out Cowdenbeath in the last round of the cup.

However his side missed out on making the final four of the Highland League Cup, succumbing 3-0 to Banks o’ Dee on Friday.

George Robesten and his Brora Rangers team-mates are in to the semi-finals of the competition after beating Formartine on penalties over the weekend.

Turriff United and former Scalloway forward John Allan are in to the last four of the Aberdeenshire Shield, meanwhile, after beating Deveronvale 1-0 last week.

Goalkeeper Katie Anderson saw her women’s Scottish Cup campaign come to an end on Sunday, with Elgin City defeating her Dryburgh Athletic side 1-0.

SHETLAND Valkyries completed an unbeaten league season with a 37-12 win over Highland on Sunday, preserving their perfect record.

That capped off a brilliant weekend for rugby as a whole, with the men’s side and the under-13/14 boys team also victorious.

The junior side thrashed Huntly 72-17 at the Clickimin, and the men were similarly imperious at home – beating Garioch 65-0 in the Caledonia North Bowl quarter-finals to take them in to the last four.

The Valkyries then hosted Highland on Sunday in their final league fixture of the campaign, having won the seven matches previous in the division to seal another title.

And they ensured they made it a perfect eight with a 37-12 win, which stands them in good stead for their regional league play-off fixtures in the new year.
