Police / Investigation launched after trawler lands aircraft wreckage with human remains
POLICE have launched an investigation after a Peterhead trawler landed a large piece of fuselage at the Greenhead Base, in Lerwick, earlier on Sunday.
Officers confirmed that the wreckage of the small aircraft contained human remains.
The Benarkle II hauled in the section of undercarriage on Friday afternoon while fishing to the northeast of Lerwick.
It is believed that the discovery could be linked to the disappearance of a German Cessna Aircraft with one person on board in September last year. According to an air accident investigation report last radar contact with the aircraft was recorded around 70 nautical miles southeast of Shetland.
A short video showing the wreckage being lifted on to a Northwards truck earlier today is currently making the rounds on social media.
A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: “Police received a report of a small aircraft having been recovered from the water in the North Sea, north-east of Lerwick, around 2.20pm on Friday 6 December.
“The aircraft was brought to shore on Sunday 8 December, and human remains were found within. Enquiries are ongoing.”
