Election / Another candidate in the running for Shetland North by-election

ANOTHER candidate has put their name forward for the upcoming Shetland North by-election.

Andrew Hall, from Brae, will compete in the by-election which is taking place in January following the resignation of Tom Morton.

It comes after NHS Shetland vice-chair Natasha Cornick put her name forward for the vacant seat.

With at least two candidates in the running it means – unlike the last election in 2022 – folk in Shetland North will be able to go to the ballot box.

Andrew Hall.

Some of the issues on Hall’s radar include education, including a new Brae High School while retaining rural primaries, and school transport.

He also said housing is a key issue, while speed limits, industrial development and council finances are also important.

Hall has worked in the SIC’s finance department for nearly 40 years, and also runs the Burravoe wigwams in Brae – while he has also been involved in local community groups.

His family moved to Shetland from Leeds in 1980, and he now lives on his wife’s family croft in Brae, where his two sons grew up.

Hall, the Delting Up Helly Aa jarl in 2018, said he would not make “unrealistic promises” to the ward but said collective support from elected members is “required to solve issues in our area”.

With at least two candidates in the running, voting will take place on 23 January, with the result announced the day after. People have until 17 December to submit their nomination papers.

Currently representing Shetland North are Emma Macdonald and Andrea Manson.
