Energy / Power lost to more than 7,000
MORE THAN 7,000 properties across the isles lost power for a short period on Sunday morning after overhead power lines between Lerwick and Sullom Voe were struck by an object.
This caused the power to go off to around 7,300 households and businesses in Shetland at five past eleven.
A spokesperson for network operator SSEN said on Monday the company’s automated technology restored supplies to half of those affected within a minute, with power to the remaining customers being restored by 11.28am.
“We’d like to thank our customers for their patience as our teams worked hard to restore the power as safely and as quickly following yesterday morning’s short interruption to their supplies,” the spokesperson said.
SSEN’s safety equipment is capable of detecting an object coming into contact with overhead lines, for example a tree, branch, airborne debris or a bird.
The automated technology then checks to make sure there is no longer anything in contact with it before reconnecting supplies.
