Health / Hospital ‘not unsafe structurally’ but ‘immediate’ improvements needed, NHS says
SERVICES at the Gilbert Bain Hospital could be disrupted over the coming months as NHS Shetland carries out investigative works on the aging building.
The health board said it has been “thoroughly assessing” the Lerwick hospital and associated buildings in recent months, to ensure it remains safe and functional for patients and staff.
Surveys have found the building is “not unsafe structurally”, the NHS said, and there is no evidence that hazardous RAAC concrete has been used.
However, “some immediate work is needed” on the hospital, the health board added.
“The community will be aware this is an older facility that requires ongoing upkeep and maintenance to ensure it remains safe and functional,” it said.
“While we await the final outcomes of the various condition surveys, it has become evident that some immediate work is needed, particularly as we approach the colder months, to preserve the building and support its continued use for at least the next 10-15 years.”
Planning and investigative works are scheduled to take place in January.
That may mean that some services are temporarily adjusted or relocated, the health board said.
“We understand that maintenance work can sometimes be disruptive, and we are taking every possible step to minimise the impact on hospital services,” it said.
“Our dedicated teams are working hard to ensure that all aspects of service provision remain operational as the work progresses.
“Please be assured that services will remain accessible, and patient care will continue with minimal interruption.”
NHS Shetland said it was “committed to keeping patients and visitors informed of any changes to services or access well in advance”.
“Every effort is being made to limit disruption and ensure that our hospital remains a safe and welcoming environment for all,” it added.
“Thank you for your patience and understanding as we undertake these essential improvements.”

It comes as NHS Shetland awaits clarity on whether the Scottish Government will resume the Gilbert Bain Hospital replacement project, with an update expected in December.
The project was put on hold earlier this year amid financial challenges within the government leading to NHS construction schemes paused.
The Gilbert Bain Hospital in Lerwick has been operating in its current form since the 1960s.
