Community / New wellbeing group to be launched for dads
A NEW wellbeing group is being set up for dads in Shetland.
Mind Your Head’s ‘Well Dads’ group will meet every Saturday, starting on 30 November.
That session will run between 10am and midday in room 12 of Islesburgh Community Centre in Lerwick.
It is described as a “low level wellbeing drop-in group” for dads with children aged five and under to come and talk with other dads.
Mind Your Head staff will also be on hand to hear from fathers about how they are feeling as they adjust to raising their young family.
The charity said: “We would love to welcome anyone dads to come along for a hot drink and chat with us and we have a small selection of toys and crafts for you to enjoy with your little ones.”
Chief executive Anouska Civico explained the idea for Well Dads came after the success of its ‘wellbeing 1000’ group.
“Although it’s open to any parent or caregiver over the years we have been running it we have had only one dad attend,” she said.
“By offering a group to specifically for dads on a Saturday should make it more accessible to working dads and the fact that its males-only may make it more appealing than a typical mother and toddler group”.
“We are also fortunate to have both male and female staff members who will be able to offer different things to the group”.
The group has been funded by donations made to the charity and the plans are to run it for six months.
If it is popular then further funding will be explored so that the group can become a permanent fixture.
Prior to the group launching Mind Your Head is inviting anyone to come room 12 in Islesburgh tomorrow (23 November) between 10am and midday to find out more about the new initiative.
For this open event dads, professionals and anyone interested in finding out more are welcome to drop in.
