Marine / Fish landings remain below target in Scalloway and Cullivoe, meeting hears
THE COUNCIL will seek to understand if there are any trends behind lower fish landings through its ports in Scalloway and Cullivoe.
Figures presented to a meeting of Shetland Islands Council’s (SIC) harbour board on Wednesday showed that in the second quarter of 2024/25 20,332 fish boxes came through the Scalloway market. This compares to a target of 36,000.
Overall in 2023/24 there were nearly 160,000 boxes through the year.
In terms of tonnage for the second quarter of 2024/25 this was 847, compared to the target of 1,500.
The figures released by the SIC appear to confirm a trend that has been reported by Shetland News previously.
Port infrastructure manager Andrew Inkster said the SIC is discussing matters with Shetland Fishermen’s Association and the auction company.
This is so the council can understand any trends and the issues affecting them.
It is understood that the sinking of the fishing boat Opportune in March and a breakdown of Angelina will have affected landings in Scalloway, while the weather has not helped either.
Meanwhile the meeting also heard CCTV camera systems are set to be installed at the SIC’s Symbister and Toft ports.
Harbourmaster Greg Maitland said having CCTV in place should be a “major help” for the council when investigating incidents such as oil sheen on the water.
He said equipment has been bought “so it’s just the case of installation”.
