Weather / Weather warning for snow and ice extended to Wednesday
There was a two-vehicle road accident in Lerwick this morning in the wintry conditions
GRITTERS have been kept busy this morning (Monday) following heavy snow showers in some parts of Shetland.
There was traffic congestion on the roads into Lerwick this morning due to the wintry road conditions, with reports of vehicles – including a lorry – getting stuck.
There was also a two-vehicle road accident on Lerwick’s North Road this morning, with no injuries reported.
Meanwhile the Met Office has extended its yellow weather warning for snow and ice for the north of Scotland, including Shetland, until 10am on Wednesday.
The conditions this morning meant there was no school bus through lower Gulberwick for Sound Primary School and Anderson High School.
The council said all roads are now passable although wintry showers are likely through the day.
A spokesperson said: “The week ahead is looking cold with temperatures likely to stay close to freezing.
“The road surface temperature is lower than the air temperature and it will be icy on untreated surfaces.
“We expect that our gritting crews will be inspecting roads each morning from around 5am, and vehicles will be gritting from around 6am and throughout the day, where necessary.
“Please drive to the conditions and make sure your vehicle is cleared of any lying snow on the roof, windscreen and lights before you set off.”
The council also offers live data on road conditions in Gulberwick, Sandness, Toft and Unst on this webpage.
Police Scotland’s area commander for Shetland Chris Sewell said drivers are reminded to plan ahead and allow extra time for journeys.
The general advice from the police is for drivers to check they have sufficient fuel, warm clothing, food, water and a phone charger in case of delays.
NHS Shetland said due to the current weather conditions and forecast for overnight and tomorrow, the vaccination centre at Grantfield will be closed from 1pm today (Monday) and all day on Tuesday 19.
Anyone with an appointment is being contacted to make other arrangements.
Meanwhile NorthLink says its northbound sailing from Aberdeen to Lerwick on Tuesday will now depart two hours early at 5pm due to the weather forecast.
