Housing / Planning go-ahead for turning Park Hall into flats
PLANS to return the historic Park Hall to its former glory have been given the green light by Shetland Islands Council.
Owner Beverley Powis is aiming to transform the derelict former laird’s house in the Westside into three one-bedroom flats – two of which would be rented out locally.
Powis will live in the third flat, having said previously she told her son she wanted to buy Park Hall as soon as she saw it.
She said all of the rubbish has been removed from the abandoned building, and it has been made secure this year.
While planning permission has been granted, she is waiting for building warrants – which are due at the end of this month.
“I don’t expect my builder will want to start before spring as the first activity will be scaffolding,” she said.
Powis aims to move into the building within the next five years, with the lettable units to be finished soon after.
The two-storey building was built around 1900, and is a category C-listed building.
It has been empty and derelict for over three decades, with an inspection in 2000 finding the first floor was collapsing.
Historic Environment Scotland said as far back as 2003 it was suffering from major structural flaws.
The building was previously owned by Shetland Amenity Trust.
