GOALKEEPER Henry Oldbury helped his Golspie Sutherland side beat top-of-the-table Halkirk on Saturday to move within six points of the North Caledonian league leaders.
Halkirk had not lost a league match at home all season before the visit of Golspie at the weekend, with Oldbury starting the match in goals.
He was called into action just two minutes into the match, being forced to make a strong save to deny Halkirk an early lead.
Golspie would take the lead 17 minutes in through a stunning volley, with Oldbury producing another two big saves before the half-time whistle to keep his side in front.
Halkirk would equalise ten minutes after the restart, but Golspie stunned the hosts to re-take the lead through a thunderous 20-yard strike in off the crossbar.
Oldbury was called on again to save a late Halkirk free-kick, but held firm to ensure the away side are now just six points behind the league’s top team – and with two games in hand.
Fellow goalkeeper Katie Anderson is looking forward to tonight’s (Monday) Scottish Women’s Cup draw after her Dryburgh Athletic side thrashed Edinburgh Caledonia.
Dryburgh found themselves a goal down at half-time in Sunday’s second round match, but five second half goals saw them comfortably through to the third round.
They will wait to see who their next opponents are, with the 12 Scottish Women’s Premier League teams – including Celtic, Rangers and Glasgow City – joining the draw.
Two Shetlanders are vying for the top prize in the Highland League following the weekend’s latest results.
Spencer Moreland, who grew up in the isles before moving to join the St Johnstone youth ranks, started as his Brechin side ensured they kept top spot on Saturday.
They beat Formartine 3-1 to maintain a fine start to the campaign.

George Robesten, who is on loan from Ross County and formerly played for Scalloway, played the final 30 minutes as his Brora Rangers side moved into second place in the table.
They did so by overcoming Banks O’ Dee 2-0 away from home to leapfrog them in the table.
Another former Scalloway forward, John Allan, started but was unable to prevent Turriff United from falling to defeat against Rothes.
SHETLAND’S netball 2’s are out of the Scottish Cup following defeat to tricky opponents on the mainland.
The side came up against Glasgow Fury in Aberdeen on Sunday, succumbing to an eventual 63-25 loss.
Shetland Netball Association said the lasses “gave it their all”, with some “great passages of play”.
“Shetland made some lovely interceptions, but struggled to convert against the defence of Fury,” they added.
Three junior players earned their first senior caps during the match, with the team saying they were not “looking forward to getting back to training” ahead of upcoming matches.
Rhea Ni Tnuthail was given player of the match by Glasgow, with Erin Leask and Rowan Nicolson given the coach’s player of the match award.
Clare Smith was voted player of the match by her team-mates.
THE VOLLEYBALL side also suffered two defeats on the mainland at the weekend.
Having secured two home victories the weekend before, the blues went into Saturday’s fixtures with a spring in their step.
But they knew tricky ties awaited them, against division one’s top two sides in Forza Regazzi and Lenzie in Glasgow.
Forza proved too strong for Shetland in the first fixture, walking away with a three-set victory – 25-17, 25-14, 25-21.
Lenzie then raced in to a two-set lead in the second match, winning the opening sets 25-8, 25-21.
Shetland won the third 25-20 to set up an interesting end to the match, and though they pushed Lenzie all the way they were able to squeeze out a 25-19 final set to win 3-1.
THERE was away success for the Shetland under-16 rugby team, however.
They thrashed Greenock 85-15 on the road in Scottish Rugby’s national youth bowl at Fort Matilda.
Shetland under-14s were defeated comfortably by Gordonians at the Clickimin.
