Community / Rare jobs on offer in Fair Isle

IT IS not every day a job becomes available in Fair Isle – let alone two.

The Fair Isle Bird Observatory is currently on the look-out for a head of ornithology, and a hospitality manager.

They would be based in the observatory building, which is being rebuilt following a devastating fire in 2019.

Once it opens next year, the new observatory will offer full board en‐suite accommodation and facilities for up to 35 visitors.

Both posts would include “year-round accommodation, food, utilities and other benefits” in addition to a “generous package of renumeration”.

The trust which runs the bird observatory said it welcomes applications from “couples/partnerships” who can jointly undertake the two roles, and also from individual applicants who can undertake one role or the other.

Fair Isle is located between the Shetland mainland and Orkney and has a population of around 50.

It is only three miles long, and one and a half miles wide.

It lies 24 miles south of the Shetland mainland and 27 miles from North Ronaldsay, the most northerly of the Orkney islands.

It can be accessed by plane and ferry from the Shetland mainland.

The previous Fair Isle Bird Observatory – an important feature of tourism for the island – was destroyed by fire in 2019, with work ongoing on its replacement. The new build is expected to open in 2025.

The building is operated by the Fair Isle Bird Observatory Trust. More details about the jobs can be found online.
