A “SMALL” fire at the Lower Blackhill industrial estate in Lerwick has been extinguished.

A compressor outside the site of the Gremista grid supply point building started smoking at around 8.30am this morning.

Two appliances from Lerwick attended, but left the scene by 10am.

SSE, which is behind the grid supply project, said the fire was quickly brought under control with no injuries.

Construction work was able to resume again shortly after the incident.

An assessment is under way to see what damage has been caused, though this is thought to be minimal.

The site will host infrastructure needed to connect Shetland’s energy network to the national grid for the first time.
