Entertainment / Hunt for keen singers to Raise the Roof with youth choir
PEOPLE aged between 12 and 19 with a love for singing are being urged to thinking about joining a local youth choir.
The Raise The Roof youth choir was started recently by music teacher Suzanne Briggs, who is keen to see the project expanded even further.
A free taster session is being held tomorrow (Wednesday) at Islesburgh for anyone thinking to give it a go, from 7.15pm to 8.45pm in room 11.
Briggs said they were a “super friendly and enthusiastic group”, with complete beginners “absolutely welcome”.
After a successful first term, Briggs said they were now eager for the choir to bring in even more keen singers.
“The choir took its first steps last term and the young people who have come along each week have been amazing,” she said.
“They are so motivated and genuinely supportive of one-another throughout the rehearsal process.
“What we really need now is more singers so that we can truly raise the roof.”
The main block of sessions for term two of the youth choir will run from 6 November to 11 December, from 7.15pm-8.45pm every Wednesday at Islesburgh.
The final night will see the choir perform a Christmas concert, something Briggs described as “very exciting”.
“We are delighted to be collaborating with local composer Aleks McKay this term, who will be lending his expertise to some Christmas arranging for the choir.
“The choir covers a range of music and choir members are positively encouraged to make suggestions of songs they would like us to include.”
Choir member Emma Coutts said they would be performing popular songs and “music that everyone knows”.
“When you sing in a group it takes the pressure off one person,” she said.
“If you’re feeling shy you can still sing in front of other people.”

Briggs said they could not offer free places to everybody for the whole term, but said it was “really important that cost should not present an economic barrier” to anyone.
She added “making music is for everybody”, and urged people to contact her if a free place would allow them or their child to attend.
