Community / Plenty on offer in Viking Genes online auction fundraiser
A HUGE fundraising auction is set to take place next month to raise money for the Viking Genes research project.
More than 140 lots have been pledged so far, with the items set to go under the virtual hammer between 8 and 10 November.
The items are being displayed on this Facebook page in the meantime for folk to view them.
The auction is being organised by a small group of local volunteers keen to raise cash for the Viking Genes project.
The project, led by Professor Jim Wilson through the University of Edinburgh, has undertaken a number of health studies in the Northern Isles over recent years to explore the genetic make-up of islanders.
One of the more recent findings was an estimate that one in 40 people with Whalsay family heritage are likely to have a variant of a gene associated with a higher risk of cancer.

The team works to return results to people who have been identified with a higher risk of developing life-threatening conditions, allowing for earlier intervention and preventative surgeries.
However an appeal was launched by the project encouraging people to donate or fundraise to support its work.
More information on why the Viking Genes project is seeking more donations can be read here.
Leona Wishart, one of the people from across Shetland organising the online auction, said the aim is to raise “much needed funds” for Viking Genes.
Among the many items up for grabs are sweet treats, a boat trip to Papa Stour, a three course meal booked by Bo Simmons, knitwear, jewellery, artwork and accommodation.
The auction will go live at 8am on 8 November until 7pm on 10 November.
Wishart said the team is happy to accept additional items for the auction.
