Community / Gulberwick waste water improvement work set to get underway
IMPROVEMENT work to waste water facilities in Gulberwick is set to get underway next week.
Scottish Water said the project involves the construction of four new septic tanks and associated chambers and pipework.
The works, which will take place in an area accessed from a road located off Langton Road opposite Gulberwick Hall, also involves the renewal of a section of the current outfall pipe and improvement works to the existing access road and junction.
The current pumping station, which overlooks the beach, will be demolished.
Work is scheduled to begin on Monday (28 October), and it is expected to take approximately nine months.
Vehicle access along the track towards the beach will be restricted for the duration of the works. Pedestrian access will be maintained.
There may be some temporary traffic management at the junction of the access road with Langton Road when the improvement works take place there.
The planned work to renew a section of the existing outfall pipe will be tide dependent which may require some works to be done out with normal working hours.
Construction traffic will access the site from Langton Road during the work.
A Scottish Water spokesperson said: “We are carrying out this important improvement work to ensure we can continue to provide the service our customers in Gulberwick expect, far into the future.
“During this work there will be no planned interruption to water or waste water services and sinks, taps, toilets and showers can be used as normal.
“We thank residents and road users in advance for their patience and understanding while we carry out this essential work to maintain the local sewer network.”
Caledonia Water Alliance will carry out this work on behalf of Scottish Water.
The Gulberwick station – which pumped waste up to Lerwick – has been affected by a fault since 2017, and a direct replacement was not available.
A temporary measure was introduced to hold sewage in a septic tank, with a tanker removing waste to the water treatment plant in nearby Lerwick.
