Sport / Sporting round-up: 22 October

BOTH of Shetland’s senior rugby teams saw their Saturday afternoon matches called off after their opponents could not field teams.

Peterhead Women’s team had been due to travel north to face Valkyries at the Clickimin at 12pm, before the men’s team faced Deeside on the same surface two hours later.

Valkyries have been awarded a nominal 28-0 victory over Peterhead – putting them top of the Arnold Clark Caledonia Women’s League 1 with three wins from three.

The men’s side, however, will have to wait until April to face Deeside on home soil. Deeside were also deducted three points for the postponement.

Both teams have also been nominated for the Team of the Year award at next month’s Shetland Sports Awards.

STRONGMAN Andrew Goodlad, distance runner Michelle Sandison and angler Sean McCaffrey are in the running to lift this year’s Sportsperson of the Year prize at those awards.

Goodlad was crowned world strongman champion in the under-105kg category earlier this year after a two-day competition, after being crowned Scottish natural strongman champion previously.

He also placed second in the UK and Ireland natural strongman event.

Whalsay runner Sandison retained her 5,000m Scottish Masters title while also setting a personal best and a new Shetland record in the Scottish 10k championships in Stirling last month.

And McCaffrey captained Scotland to Four Nations angling victory on Lough Ennell in Ireland earlier this year, before helping Shetland to win in Orkney in the annual inter-county for the first time in 47 years.

The award winners are announced at the Clickimin on Friday 8 November.

SHETLAND’S netball 2’s will kick off their Scottish Cup campaign at the start of November in Aberdeen.

The blues will meet Glasgow Fury on Sunday 3 November, with coach Rhianne Colvin taking 11 players south for the fixture.

Rowan Nicolson will captain the team, and will be joined by Sophie Morris, Erin Leask, Florrie Hughson, Clare Smith, Rhea Ni Tnuthail, Lianne Jamieson, Morgan Taylor, Kerry Nicholson, Shannon Stevenson and Paula Williamson.

THE NETBALL association has also announced changes to its training set-up, to give players the best chance of being picked for Shetland’s Scottish Cup and inter-county duties.

Shetland Netball Association said there would be six training sessions before the end of the year where all players would be invited, with as many urged to make it along and put themselves in the picture for a Scottish Cup place.

Inter-county trials will be held on 24 November and 8 December between 12-2pm at the Clickimin, with a long squad for the county to be picked.

The first of the training sessions with all players invited takes place at the Scalloway Games Hall on 2 November between 2-4pm.

SHETLAND Girls and Women’s Football FC has said it is “delighted” after being awarded £750 to assist with the cost of coach education.

The club gave its “sincere thanks” to the Scottish Football Partnership Trust and the Kirkpatrick Fraser Charitable Trust for the funding.
