Council / Council issues firework safety advice

SHETLAND Islands Council (SIC) has issued firework safety advice ahead of Bonfire Night next month.

The council advised people to buy only from licensed retailers, either in-store or online, and reminded them it is illegal to buy fireworks (other than sparklers or indoor fireworks) for people under 18.

Fireworks can only be sold between 7am and 6pm.

The SIC also told anyone planning to set off fireworks to “keep to the permitted times”, reminding it is against the law to set off fireworks before 6pm.

The firework curfew is midnight on 5 November.

“If you plan to set off any fireworks, let your neighbours know in advance,” the SIC said.

“Bear in mind that people are more likely to plan to protect pets and other animals on traditional firework dates.

“Before letting off fireworks, read all the safety instructions on every box – you need to know important things like how far away people must be.

” Once any debris has cooled down, tidy it up and soak it in water overnight. Then put it in a rubbish bag and in the bin.”
