THE PEOPLE of Papa Stour have been reconnected to their normal electricity supply after engineers from SSEN Distribution successfully switched power to a recently installed replacement subsea cable.

The remote island lost power supply at the end of January when the exisiting subsea cable developed a fault.

Mobile generators were brought in to supply around 20 customers on the island while SSEN Distribution investigated the fault.

The first phase of installing a new subsea cable was completed at the end of August.

The company said that islanders were switched to the replacement cable on Tuesday shortly before 11am.

The mobile generators have now been disconnected, and plans are under way to remove this equipment from the island.

SSEN said it would like to thank Papa Stour’s residents for their patience while it carried out these works as safely and quickly as possible.
