Council / No injuries after cement mixer topples over on Bigga

THE BLUEMULL Sound ferry route has been reduced to a single vessel service after a cement mixer fell over onboard the Bigga, damaging vehicles nearby.

Shetland Islands Council (SIC) said that no-one was injured in the incident, which occurred shortly after 7.30am.

However an ambulance did attend and one person was treated for shock.

An internal investigation is now under way, and the incident will be reported to the Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB).

All bookings were suspended on the Yell to Unst route following an “operational incident” at around 8am.

The cement mixer toppled when the Bigga hit a wave and listed. The heavy plant was not chained down, it is understood.

The Geira is currently covering the route, running to the Saturday timetable.

The Bigga has been taken out of service and engineers will be checking the vessel for any damage.

Further updates will be available on the ferries voicebank – 01595 743971 – when that inspection work is completed.
