THE LAST run on the Bluemull Sound ferry route will be at 7.05pm tonight after today’s incident aboard the Bigga

The Geira is currently operating to a Saturday timetable, with bookings suspended, after a cement mixer toppled over and damaged several vehicles at around 7.30am this morning.

No-one was injured in the incident, though one person was treated for shock.

The last run from Gutcher to Belmont will now be at 6.55pm tonight, with the final run from Belmont to Hamarsness at 7.05pm.

Shetland Islands Council (SIC) said it cannot provide a service after this time as it has no certificate engineer for the Geira.

The engineer who is onboard will be out of his hours for this day by then, the SIC added.

The Geira will operate to a Saturday timetable from Gutcher at 6.45am tomorrow, with all bookings still suspended.

An internal investigation is now under way into this morning’s incident on the Bigga, and will be reported to the Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB).

The cement mixer toppled when the Bigga hit a wave and listed. The heavy plant was not chained down, it is understood.
