Council / Drivers warned to take care after extensive flooding

Traffic cones and a flood warning sign are placed on a dark street as a caution for flooding.

DRIVERS are being asked to take care after extensive flooding throughout Shetland’s roads.

Some of the worst areas affected are the A970 main road at Dale golf course, the north end of Quarff and Kergord, Shetland Islands Council (SIC) said.

In Lerwick there is also standing water at Sound roundabout and Sound Service Station, where traffic lights will be set up.

Council staff are placing warning signs at many locations but this will take time and may not reach all affected areas.

The SIC advised drivers to drive to the conditions, keeping their distance from the vehicle in front and reducing their speed.

“In flooded areas, give way to oncoming traffic if necessary until you can both safely pass flooding,” the SIC said.

“With soaked ground, slow drainage and continued rainfall, localised flooding will continue to be a hazard for a while yet.

“Drivers may wish to delay their journey until road conditions have improved.”
