Entertainment / JAWS returns with two concerts this month

SHETLAND Jazz and World Sounds (JAWS) is gearing up for two final concerts this year, both being held later this month.

On Friday (18 October) JAWS is offering an autumn jazz cocktail in the Lerwick Town Hall featuring pianist Brian Kellock and saxophone player Steven Kettley.

They will be supported musically by Rowen Thomson, Jim Quinn and Eamonn Watt, with cocktails by Jonny Sandison.

Kellock is well known in the isles having played on several occasions over the years, including as part of the Scottish National Jazz orchestra at the Clickimin more than ten years ago.

Kettley meanwhile is described as an innovative saxophone player, best known for his work with Salsa Celtica and the Cauld Blast Orchestra.

A week later, on Friday 25 October, Shetland’s own jazz export Norman Willmore returns to the isles to play a Halloween concert at Sandwick’s Carnegie Hall.

Willmore will be joined by percussionist Renzo Spiteri for what organiser Jeff Merrifield described as a “sound-noir experience” that should not be missed.

Merrifield added: “Norman has prepared a special solo set, which gets its premiere. Renzo will also have a solo set of percussion and electronics.  “Their duo piece will be based on work from the Lovecraft album and its related Halloween themes.”

Both concerts start at 7.30pm and tickets can be bought on the door or online via the JAWS website for £12 each.
