Sport / Sporting round-up: 14 October
SHETLAND’S rugby players enjoyed a fine weekend at home, with both the men’s and women’s sides romping to comprehensive victories.
The Valkyries thrashed Inverness Craig Dunain women 84-0 in the early afternoon fixture at the Clickimin to make it two wins from two so far this season.
That was swiftly followed by a 38-12 victory for the men against Aberdeen University Medics on the same pitch, with Shetland moving up to third in the table after a third win from four fixtures.
TEENAGER George Robesten netted a late equaliser to keep loan side Brora Rangers in touching distance of Highland league leaders Brechin on Saturday.
Robesten, who is on loan from Ross County, scored in the 81st minute to earn Brora a 2-2 draw away to Brechin – a result which keeps the gap at seven points, with Brora having a game in hand.
He moved to Brora Rangers after making his Scottish Premiership debut for Ross County earlier this season.
Fellow former Scalloway forward John Allan was also on the scoresheet for Turriff United on Saturday, equalising against Clachnacuddin after eight minutes.
However Clachnacuddin would go on to win the match 3-1, with Turriff 14th in the table after 14 matches.
Lewis Harkness – who scored the winning goal for Shetland in this summer’s inter-county match – helped new side Golspie Sutherland win their North Caledonian league encounter with Tain St Duthus at the weekend.
Harkness started the match in Golspie, which ended in a 2-1 win for the home team.
His Lerwick Spurs’ team-mate Henry Oldbury has also signed for Golspie Sutherland, but was not involved in the match at the weekend.
TWO mainland table tennis coaches have recently delivered coaching sessions for keen parents and players in the isles.
Table Tennis Scotland’s Stuart Wallis gave 10 people an introductory table tennis course on a recent visit, which will allow them to deliver sessions at Aith and Scalloway – as well as helping out at the junior league.

Fellow table tennis coach Stephen Gertsen was also in the isles, running sessions for both the junior and senior players and delivering some one-to-one sessions.
Shetland Badminton Association also brought a coach up from south to deliver coaching sessions over the weekend.
Badminton Scotland’s Tom Lambert put four people through their level one coaching course at Sandwick Games Hall, which will help them deliver their own coaching sessions in future.
