Court / Man receives prison warning after admitting two assaults
A MAN from Lerwick who assaulted two other men in the Trench nightclub in December last year – leaving one with a fractured collar bone – has been told that he might go to prison.
Connor Millar, of Hoofields, pleaded guilty to two charges of assault, committed in the early hours of 30 December, when he appeared at Lerwick Sheriff Court on Thursday morning.
Procurator fiscal Duncan Mackenzie told the court how a group of friends out for the night were in the process of organising transport home when one of them noticed Millar behaving inappropriately towards a female friend.
When he went over to challenge the 26-year-old, Millar grabbed hold of his clothing and propelled him to the ground before repeatedly punching him on his head.
The court heard how this led to another man from the group intervening, but again Millar reacted violently, punching him on the head and knocking him to the ground where he was rendered unconscious.
Both men were taken to hospital where, following an x-ray, it turned out the second victim had suffered a fractured collar bone.
The fiscal said recovery had been slow and painful.
Defence agent Paul Barnett said his client understood that the court would treat the assaults seriously and asked for reports to be prepared.
The solicitor described Millar as a hard working young man who had a share in a fishing boat, adding that he was in a position to pay a significant financial fine.
He said he would speak further in mitigation once reports had been prepared.
Sheriff Ian Cruickshank agreed to adjourn the case until the end of October to allow a criminal justice social work report and a restriction of liberty assessment to be compiled.
He told Millar that it was incumbent on him to obtain these reports as this would also give him the option to send him to prison.
All options will be considered, the sheriff told Millar.
