Community / Winter programmes return to the radio
BBC Radio Shetland’s late night programmes return next week to ease listeners into the long winter nights.
A wide range of new shows and voices will be heard over the airwaves between 6pm and 7pm every weekday night.
The winter programme begins on Monday night with Claire White along with a “lichtsome” hour of chat and tunes with well-kent Shetlanders.
Shetland Wool Week patrons Addie, Margaret and Anne Doull are her first guests on Monday’s Claire White and Friends, where they will talk farming, family life and more – while picking their favourite songs.
Author and journalist Jen Stout’s first hand reporting of the war in Ukraine brings the conflict home to listeners.
BBC Radio Shetland will bring all five episodes of Night Train to Odesa which explores the human cost of Russia’s war in Ukraine.
A new programme for this year is Into the Pitt – which will see metal frontman Dave Kok and Radio Shetland’s Iona Nicol host live guests from the isles’ vibrant rock scene.
And Arnold and Laurie Goodlad will bring Good Yarns wi da Goodlads, talking sea, fishing and good stories from in and around Shetland’s waters.
Radio Shetland stalwart Mary Blance is back with the popular books programme featuring writers young and old, while Jane Moncrieff also returns with 60 Minutes.
She will catch up with former lord lieutenant Bobby Hunter, retired head teacher of the Anderson High School Valerie Nicolson and former Loganair pilot Eddie Watt to hear their stories and adventures.

Music fans are not forgotten this winter either – Barbara Cheyne is along with Fae Hameaboot, Jimmy Carlyle hosts Shades of Blue from Australia and Jim Pearson and Shelia Manson are back with Wir Kinda Country.
Adam Guest brings another season of the Pitt Lane Sessions featuring bands and solo musicians from across the isles.
Alan Gifford and Cecil Hughson will be along with their guests showcasing the best of Shetland traditional music in Catgut and Ivory, while Jeff Merrifield and Joy Duncan return with Jazz and World Sounds.
Meanwhile local cartoonist Stephen Gordon draws on his varied musical collection in Spreewheelin wi Smirk.
Gary Peterson and Steve Davidson are back with Oota Da Cans and Neil Robertson will be playing some of his favourite music down the decades in Retro Radio.
BBC Radio Shetland editor John Johnston said: “We’re all delighted to be back with so many new programmes as well as the old favourites to offer our listeners through the winter months.”
The late programmes are broadcast every weekday night from 6pm on 92.7FM or on BBC Sounds.
