Politics / Convention of Highlands and Islands set to visit Lerwick
POLITICIANS and representatives from a number of councils and organisations are set to head to Shetland next month as Lerwick prepares to host the next meeting of the Convention of the Highlands and Islands.
The meeting is set to be held at Mareel on Monday 7 October.
The convention is designed to “strengthen alignment between the Scottish Government and member organisations in order to support a fair, green and growing economy”.
The Scottish Government website said the convention also “seeks to enable the exchange of ideas on strategic issues affecting the people of the Highlands and Islands”.
The convention meets twice a year and meetings are open to the public.
Members of the convention include councils and NHS boards from the Highlands and Islands, as well as agencies like Transport Scotland, VisitScotland and Highlands and Islands Enterprise.
Members of the Scottish Government also attend the meetings, with then-deputy first minster Shona Robison among the attendees at the last convention meeting in March.
Some of the topics covered in recent meetings have included social care services, the national islands plan, transport and digital connectivity.
