Transport / More ferry disruption in the North Isles
BOTH the Yell Sound and Bluemull Sound ferry services are running with a single vessel today (Tuesday).
For Yell the issue lies with a lack of engineers. It will run with a shift timetable, with bookings available.
In Bluemull Sound – which runs to Unst and Fetlar – the Geira remains out of service after developing a mechanical fault last week.
It will be single vessel today with a Saturday timetable, and bookings are suspended. The Fivla is currently covering the service as the Bigga is yet to return from dry dock.
There has been regular disruption on the two ferry services over the last fortnight.
It comes, somewhat ironically, as councillors have been discussing a report on ferry resilience.
That report – which includes recommendations to investigate and progress a series of staffing actions such as possible adjustments to shift patterns and refining recurring recruitment – is expected to get its final approval at a meeting of the full council tomorrow (Wednesday).
There is also a focus on exploring opportunities for the acquisition of second-hand and new vessels.
