UPDATE: Mareel’s cafe/bar will now be open between 6.30pm and 10pm on Thursday (26 September) as well as 10am to 5pm on Saturday (28 September).

THE MAREEL cafe/bar is set to be closed for most of this week due to ongoing staff shortages.

The only time the cafe/bar will be open and serving customers will be on Friday (27 September), from 10am to midnight.

On Friday night Aly Bain and Phil Cunningham will be performing in the auditorium.

The cafe/bar will be closed completely on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

It will not be serving anything on Saturday and Sunday but people will be able to take a seat there between 10am to 4pm on those days.

On Sunday the auditorium is set to host a Wool Week themed craft fair.

The arts venue said during hours when the cafe/bar is closed, tea/coffee, cake, soup, sandwiches and bottled/canned alcohol will be available from the foyer.

Staff shortages have resulted in disruption to the cafe/bar for a couple of weeks.

Mareel said it is now offering a weekly update on Mondays regarding opening hours.

In a social media post last week the venue said: “Like other places in Shetland at the moment, we are struggling to run our service in the way we would like to – we understand that this is frustrating, but we would please ask for patience towards our staff team at this time.

“We’re trying our best to provide what we can and we appreciate your support.”

The venue is also currently recruiting customer service assistants.
