Emergency services / Drivers advised of blue light training

DRIVERS are being advised to be aware of blue light driving training being carried out by the fire service in Shetland next week.

The training will take place from Monday 16 to Friday 20 September.

Fire chief Matt Mason said there would be an increase in emergency vehicles driving on the roads during that time, as drivers are put through their paces by visiting instructors.

“Our advice to drivers is you should look and listen for emergency vehicles using flashing blue lights and sirens,” Mason said.

“When one approaches, please do not panic. Our drivers are trained to safely make progress through traffic.

“Consider the route of such a vehicle and take appropriate action to let it pass, while complying with all traffic regulations.”

Mason asked drivers to pull to the side of the road and stop only if necessary, and to try to avoid stopping on a bend or narrow section of road.

“Do not endanger yourself, other road users or pedestrians, and avoid mounting the kerb,” he said.

“Do not brake harshly on approach to a junction or roundabout, as a following vehicle may not have the same view as you.”
