News / Youth workers to patrol Lerwick streets
COUNCIL staff will be on patrol in Lerwick this weekend as “detached youth workers”.
A number of Shetland Islands Council’s youth and employability team will monitor the streets of the town over the next few weeks.
The council department said it wanted to build relationships with young people and “have conversations with them and the wider community”.
It added it is working positively with schools, social work and Police Scotland.
Five young people were reported to the Youth Justice Management Department after an assault in the Harrison Square area on Friday night.
Inspector Samantha Greshon said police would also be carrying out “high visibility patrols” in and around Lerwick “in order to deter further actions which cause disruption”.
Meanwhile the SIC’s youth and employability services team is on the look-out for individuals to join its relief youth work team to enable it to continue to provide spaces for young people across the community.
