Also in the news / Singing Kettle, MP to chair committee and more…

Artie's Singing Kettle is coming to the Garrison in February.

ONE of the founders of children’s entertainment outfit The Singing Kettle is heading to Shetland next year – although there has already been “overwhelming” demand for tickets.

Artie Trezise is bringing his solo Singing Kettle show to the Garrison Theatre in Lerwick on 22 February, but a second performance is being added after the first sold out.

Tickets will go on sale online for the second show – being held later on the same day on 22 February – at 9am on Saturday (14 September).

The performances are being hosted in conjunction with local promoter Briggistanes Events.

Trezise said: “It must be around 15 years since I last performed in Shetland, during the Folk Festival.

“I remember the audience back then was fantastic, and it seems their enthusiasm has carried over to a new generation of families.

“I imagine the demand for tickets reflects both nostalgia for the young parents and the desire to share that joy with their children.”

ORKNEY and Shetland MP Alistair Carmichael has been confirmed as chair of the UK Parliament’s environment, food and rural affairs (EFRA) select committee after being nominated unopposed.

Following the general election in July, leadership of the EFRA committee was given to the Liberal Democrats, with a chair to be drawn from Lib Dem MPs in the House of Commons.

The remit of the EFRA Committee is to examine the expenditure, administration and policy of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and its associated public bodies.

An “honoured” Carmichael said: “Whether on fishing, farming, water quality or pollution, there is no shortage of issues for the committee to tackle in the coming months.

“It will take some time for the remaining members of the committee to be appointed and our ‘to do’ list is going to be lengthy, but I intend for us to hit the ground running.”

A DECOMMISSIONING waste specialist has announced the completion of a major project at its new facility in Lerwick.

Aberdeen-based Phoenix Decom recently processed 13.5km (740 tonnes) of subsea mooring rope at its 2,400m² quayside facility at the Greenhead Base, utilising a new material handler and a mobile shear unit.

Another project, involving three port calls and up to 500 tonnes of material, is scheduled for September and will see concrete mattresses, grout and steelwork recycled in Lerwick.

SSEN has lodged plans for a urea blending and storage facility at Lerwick Power Station.

The station currently uses aqueous urea for injection into a new engine which was installed back in 2021.

The purpose of the urea is to reduce emissions from the engine.

Since the engine was first installed, emissions limits have changed, which means that more urea is required to ensure that SSEN comply with these new regulations.

SSEN is keen to blend its own for both logistical and cost-saving reasons.

A spokesperson for SSEN Distribution said: “We’re always looking at ways to ensure that our operations are run safely, efficiently and as cost-effectively as possible; by installing a urea blending plant onsite, the scale and volume of urea we would be able to produce means that it would cost less overall than buying it from a third party supplier, and ensure that Lerwick Power Station continues to meet its environmental operating regulations.”

Lerwick Power Station is due to go into standby mode next year when Shetland’s energy set-up is connected to the national grid.
