A SHETLAND resident who is heading to university has been awarded a bursary worth £3,000 a year.

Jos Hatrick, who is beginning his studies in electrical and mechanical engineering at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow this month, has been awarded Ocean Kinetics’ 2024 ‘Futures’ scholarship.

He will also receive personal mentoring and the opportunity to work with Ocean Kinetics outwith term time.

Ocean Kinetics engineer and Futures programme mentor Robbie Georgeson said: “We’re very pleased to have awarded Jos the 2024 ‘Futures’ scholarship.

“His course and career ambitions align perfectly with the objectives of the scheme, and we look forward to supporting him throughout his studies.

“We very much hope that the support that Jos is afforded through the scholarship provides a firm foundation on which to build a successful career.”

Last year’s recipient Daniel Henry recently graduated with a first-class master’s degree in chemical engineering from Heriot-Watt University.

The 2022 candidates, Elsie Msalila and James Rendall, are both finishing their summer work experience at Ocean Kinetics before entering their third year of studies.

The scholarship programme is awarded to Shetland students who plan to study a STEM subject (science, technology, engineering or mathematics) at either HND or degree level.
