SHETLAND Jazz and World Sounds (JAWS) is returning from a short break with a concert at Lerwick’s Town Hall early next month.

Irish singer Christine Tobin, guitarist Phil Robson, saxophonist Raymond MacDonald and percussionist Renzo Spiteri will take to the stage at the town hall on 1 September.

It is partly celebrating the upcoming album release by Shetland JAWS’ Jeff Merrifield.

His “dream” to release album, at the age of 81, is set to come true thanks to a grant from Creative Scotland as well as crowdfunding.

The proposed project is to create an album of accessible and atmospheric improvised music based on the Cthulhu Mythos stories of the famous horror and fantasy writer, H P Lovecraft.

The album will be made by Merrifield with involvement from Shetland percussionist Renzo Spiteri.

There will be guest appearances from Norman Willmore, Christine Tobin, Phil Robson, Steve Kettley and Raymond MacDonald, a professor of improvised music.

Also involved will be filmmaker Richard Stanley, while recently added to the project are the prominent Scottish pianist Brian Kellock and actress Kate Alderton.

Artwork is being commissioned from Shetland artist Dirk Robertson, while there will also be a 12-page insert with information about the Lovecraft world from Richard Stanley and prolific Scottish horror writer, William Meikle.

Meanwhile tickets for the 1 September concert are priced at £12 and can be purchased in advance from www.thejaws.uk or on the door.
