Community / Women’s Aid ‘thrilled’ to secure Children in Need funding for new service

SHETLAND Women’s Aid will benefit from a £45,000 grant over three years in support of developing a new service that will help children and young people who are impacted by what are described as “numerous complex life challenges”.

The money, just announced, comes from the BBC’s Children in Need charity.

Three one-off £5,000 grants are also being awarded to:

  • Ability Shetland to run sport activities for children and young people living in remote island communities;
  • North Isles junior football club to allow the teams to travel to tournaments and away games in a minibus;
  • Shetland Women’s Aid to help fund craft sessions for children and young people in Shetland who are participating in the above mentioned new project.

The latest Children in Need (CiD) funding comes in addition to a £120,000 grant over three years for Ability Shetland that was announced last year.

It means that charitable organisations in Shetland are benefiting from grant funding worth £70,000 this financial year, three times the amount that is annually raised locally by the Children in Need fundraiser, held annually in the middle of November.

Shetland Women’s Aid service manager Laura Stronach said the team was “thrilled” to have been successful in receiving a total of £50,000 in support of the new service, which is due to become available from 1 October.

“We hope to make a difference by directly supporting children’s emotional safety by offering a space for children and young people to feel secure and supporting them in reducing their stress and anxiety levels that have been caused directly by domestic abuse or family breakdown,” she said.

“Our goal is to provide a safe and welcoming space where children can express themselves and find ways to support their own emotional well-being and mental health.”
