Arts / New conductor sought for community orchestra
THE SHETLAND Community Orchestra is on the look-out for a new conductor – as well as more players.
It comes after conductor Dr Alistair Justice left Shetland this summer to teach abroad.
The orchestra is keen to hear from both experienced conductors and anyone interested in developing their skills.
Shetland Community Orchestra was established in 2010 and features players from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences.
It meets twice yearly, in January and August, with rehearsals spanning around eight weeks, meeting on a Sunday afternoon at the St Columba’s Church in Lerwick.
The orchestra performs a concert at the end of each block of rehearsals.
A spokesperson said the orchestra “currently has some remaining player-conductors; however, this will leave very little playing time for these valued members and therefore we are seeking some new faces to join in”.
“This can be a full conducting role or a player-conductor role – and as mentioned earlier, the orchestra would be more than happy to support you to gain confidence in the role of conductor if you’re at an earlier stage of your conducting journey,” they added.
In addition to seeking a new conductor, the orchestra said it is always looking for new players to join, particularly those involved in lower strings and brass.
