Council / SIC consults on 20mph speed limit proposals for parts of Lerwick
SHETLAND Islands Council is inviting residents and road users to a series of consultation events to get feedback on proposals to introduce a speed limit of 20 miles per hour on a number of residential roads in Lerwick.
As part of its programme for government 2023-24, the Scottish Government has committed to continue the roll out of 20mph speed limits in built up areas across Scotland.
Lower speed limits are recognised as leading to reduction in the risk of accidents and to contribute to a safer environment, encouraging more people to walk and cycle.
Staff from the council’s roads service will attend three drop-in sessions in Lerwick during August providing more details of the streets where 20mph speed limits are being considered.
Times and locations for the drop-in sessions are as follows:
- Staneyhill Hall from 3pm to 7.30pm on Monday 19 August;
- Sound Hall from 3pm to 7.30pm on Wednesday 21 August;
- Islesburgh Community Centre from 3pm to 7.30pm on Wednesday 28 August.
For anyone unable to attend, queries or comments can be e-mailed to the Roads Service at roads@shetland.gov.uk
The council said that after this round of public meetings, there would be a period of formal consultation and comments considered, before a report is presented to councillors to make a final decision on any implementation of 20mph speed limits.
