Education / Local pupils receive exam results

MORE THAN 600 secondary pupils in Shetland have been receiving their exam results, either in the post or electronically.

The number of pupils achieving an A, B or C grade at National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher in Shetland are down across the board:

  • The A-C pass rate for Shetland, at National 5 is 79%. (2023: 82%; 2022: 86.6%). The Scottish average this year is 77.2%
  • The A-C pass rate for Shetland, at Higher is 74%. (2023: 76.7%; 2022: 79.5%) The Scottish average this year is 74.9%.
  • The A-C pass rate for Shetland at Advanced Higher is 69%. (2023: 79.3%; 2022: 88.2%) The Scottish average this year is 75.3%

This year saw the return of full course assessment in National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher courses, following consultation with learners, teachers, parents and carers. Coursework and exams for some practical subjects were removed temporarily during the pandemic.

The Scottish Qualification Authority (SQA) has this morning resolved a technical issue for pupils who signed up to receive their results by email – pupils should now have received an updated results email.

If pupils have any further issues, they should contact their school, Shetland Islands Council advised.

Chair of the council’s education committee Davie Sandison said he would like to congratulate pupils and thank their teachers and support staff who have helped them throughout the past year.

“Today is about celebrating the achievements of young people throughout Shetland who have worked hard to gain their national qualifications,” he said.

“A range of support is available for any pupil who may be disappointed with their results and I would encourage them to access this help if they feel they need it.”

Shetland MSP Beatrice Wishart added: “Congratulations to everyone in Shetland receiving results today. Results day can be exciting, after many months of hard work.

“This can also be a stressful time. If you haven’t made the grades you need for your next steps, careers advice is available from Skills Development Scotland who are holding an exam result clinic upstairs in the Mareel Café Bar on Wednesday 7 August from 10am to 3pm.”

Many schools in Shetland will be open today for senior phase pupils to discuss their exam results with staff. Advice for pupils is also available on the Skills Development Scotland website www.myworldofwork.co.uk or through the results helpline 0808 100 8000.

More details of support services can also be found at the SQA result hub at https://www.sqa.org.uk/sqa/78137.html

Pupils may appeal if they are concerned about a National 5, Higher or Advanced Higher grade and feel there may have been a mistake in the marking.

Pupils can appeal directly to the SQA Appeals Service from today, or can ask their school to do this for them.  Appeals can be prioritised if the pupil has a conditional place at university or college or in training or employment that depends on their grade.
