Business / Decommissioning waste company invests in Lerwick base
A COMPANY specialising in decommissioning waste has spent more than £500,000 on new equipment for its operations in Shetland.
Aberdeen-based Phoenix Decom is leasing quayside space at Lerwick’s Greenhead Base.
Taking into account new equipment including a material handler, mobile shear unit and decontamination system, as well as an eight-year lease, the company’s total investment in Shetland comes to around £1 million.
The 2,400m² site is expected to play a key part in fulfilling the company’s future growth aspirations and will create local jobs in parallel with growing demand for services at the location.
An example of decommissioning waste the company deals with are concrete mattresses.
As well as an office in Aberdeen’s Bridge of Don and the Shetland base, Phoenix Decom has an operational site in Dyce and licensed facilities at both Peterhead and Port of Aberdeen.
Between them, they have managed more than 40,000 tonnes of reused and recycled materials since the company’s inception in 2021.
Commenting on Phoenix Decom’s expansion in Shetland, the company’s managing director Craig Smith said: “We are indebted to Lerwick Port Authority for their support in helping us to find a site which positions us correctly to maximise opportunities within the decom sector and create work within the local area.
“This will be crucial in placing us on the correct trajectory to achieve forecast 25 per cent year on year growth, supported by our niche knowledge and expertise and flexible, adaptable service delivery that combine to put us in a unique position.”
He added that for several years that “too much work simply sails past Lerwick back to the mainland”, saying he has been contacting oil and gas operators to have a “rethink” especially in the decommissioning industry.
The company’s Lerwick base is the third fully licensed quayside decommissioning pad with required environmental permits at the port.
Lerwick Port Authority has taken in some high profile oil and gas decommissioning projects in recent years, such as the Ninian Northern platform which was dismantled at Dales Voe.
