Sport / Blues celebrate inter-county success

The Shetland team celebrating winning after the penalties.

SHETLAND was celebrating sporting success in Orkney on Saturday when the men’s football team retained the Milne Cup in a tightly fought match and the women’s hockey team took home the Lady Hamilton Cup after penalties.

It was the first time since 1982 that Shetland had won the hockey inter-county on Orkney soil.

After a goalless match including extra time, Shetland won the penalty shoot out 4-2.

It was an equally hard-fought victory for the blues on the football pitch over at Kirkwall’s Bignold Park.

After two first half goals by Jack Stout (Orkney) and Finn Regan (Shetland) it was all square after 90 minutes, taking the game to extra time.

Both teams had decent opportunities to take the lead, but it was Shetland’s Lewis Harkness who beat the Orkney keeper with a brilliant shot just minutes away from the final whistle, ensuring that Shetland retained the Milne Cup for the third consecutive year.
