Community / Wild Weemin fundraisers to head to Orkney
A GROUP of “wild weemin” who have raised thousands for charity by swimming in Shetland’s seas are set to go on tour to Orkney.
The group of hardy ladies will swim at some of Orkney’s beaches this coming weekend.
They have raised more than £27,000 for Cancer Research UK after swimming in the sea at Shetland’s accessible beaches in November last year.
It culminated in a huge sea swimming sessions at Bain’s Beach in Lerwick in December, with around 70 folk taking part.
Wild Weemin member Glynis Harcus, who is also on the Shetland Relay for Life Shetland committee, said: “As I am originally from Orkney and they don’t have their own Relay we are coming to swim there in memory of those and to any others who might be surviving cancer or who have lost their lives to cancer.”
Harcus, who lost her father Melville and brother Roy to cancer, added: “I’m doing this for them and for everyone that this heartbreaking disease impacts.”
The Wild Weemin will be shaking buckets on the beaches in Orkney for donations. People can also donate via their JustGiving page here.
Shetland Relay For Life chair Kerry Llewellyn said: “Glynis and her friends are a real inspiration and their ongoing swims are incredible.
“The Relay for life Shetland has raised £174,868 so far this year and all teams can keep adding to their totals through until the end of August.”
Meanwhile Rebecca Grant from Relay For Life’s Team Footloose is aiming to swim a marathon distance – 1,688 x 25 metre lengths – in August.
