Emergency services / Lifeboat and coastguard called out after reports of dog going over banks
EMERGENCY services were called out on Sunday morning after reports of a dog going over the banks in the Westside.
The incident at the base of cliffs at the Neaps of Norby near Sandness was reported at around 10.25am.
The injured dog was recovered by the Aith Lifeboat and was passed into the care of its owner at Melby for veterinary assessment.
Coastguard rescue teams from Hillswick, Lerwick, Sumburgh and Walls also assisted.
RNLI Aith’s crew used their lifeboat’s onboard ‘Y-boat’ upon arrival. The small, three metre inflatable craft allowed two members of the crew to navigate closer inshore to quickly locate and successfully retrieve the dog from a small beach at the base of the cliffs.
The injured dog, a collie, was then handed over to its owner at the nearby Melby pier in Sandness.
