History / Watch Catalina plane perform flyover at Sullom Voe
THE VISITING Catalina plane flew over parts of Shetland this afternoon (Thursday) ahead of leaving the isles.
The plane – the only ‘flying boat’ of its type in the UK still operational – left Sumburgh Airport shortly after 1pm and first flew over the Knab graveyard in Lerwick.
It then flew over the Sullom Voe area as well some Catalina crash sites.
The above video shows footage of the plane taken from Sella Ness.
The plane’s departure from Sumburgh was delayed due to the weather. It returned to the airport following the flyover before embarking on its trip south.
It has been in Shetland in the past couple of days as part of project to mark the 80th anniversary of Victoria Crosses (VC) being awarded to two Catalina pilots.
