Marine / Mussel production continues to increase
SHETLAND has again come out top in an annual list of mussel producing regions in Scotland.
Nearly 8,700 tonnes were produced in Shetland in 2023, which is more than 80 per cent of Scotland’s total. This figure is around 1,500 tonnes greater than 2022.
Shetland’s production in 2023 had a value of around £9.7 million – an increase from £7.3 million in 2022.
In terms of employment there is said to be 58 full-time staff involved in the shellfish industry in Shetland, 21 part-time and 12 casual workers.
The figures are included in the Scottish Government’s latest shellfish farm production survey results.
Across Scotland the total value at first sale for all shellfish species in Scotland was calculated at approximately £14.1 million, an increase of 36 per cent from the £10.4 million estimated in 2022.
Generally Scotland has recorded its highest ever level of common mussel production.
The survey is compiled from data collected directly from authorised shellfish farming businesses.
