Election / Smith to stand as Reform candidate in general election
ORKNEY based fisherman Robert Smith has confirmed that he will be standing as the Reform party candidate at the general election on 4 July.
Back in December 2019, Smith stood for the Brexit Party coming fifth in a field of six candidates.
He stood for UKIP at the 2017 general election when he again came fifth, just ahead of independent candidate Stuart Hill.
Smith said he would focus on “Covid, Net Zero and globalisation… with a smattering of fishing” during his campaign.
Reform is currently polling at 11.3 percent nationally but due to the UK’s first-past-the-post election system, few observers believe the party will be able to return any MPs.
Already publicly confirmed for the Northern Isles election are in alphabetical order: Alex Armitage (Greens), Alistair Carmichael (Lib Dems), Robert Leslie (SNP), Shane Painter (Conservatives) and Conor Savage (Labour).
