Election / General election announced for July
SHETLAND residents will get the chance to go to the polls this summer after it was announced that the general election will take place on Thursday 4 July.
The Orkney and Shetland seat is currently held by Liberal Democrat Alistair Carmichael, who has already confirmed he will stand again.
Also confirmed for the Orkney and Shetland region are Alex Armitage (Greens), Robert Leslie (SNP), Shane Painter (Conservatives) and Conor Savage (Labour).
The general election announcement was made by prime minister Rishi Sunak shortly after 5pm today (Wednesday).
