Transport / Port of Aberdeen explains why NorthLink ferry was not able to enter harbour
NORTHLINK and Aberdeen harbour have both moved to explain what led to the Hjaltland’s five-hour delay in docking at the Granite City on Wednesday.
As thick fog engulfed the city, the passenger ferry from Shetland had to wait outside the port until after midday before she was allowed to enter.
A spokesperson for the Port of Aberdeen described Wednesday’s weather as an “extreme event” which resulted in restrictions being implemented on most shipping on that day.
“During periods of reduced visibility or severe weather conditions a wide range of criteria are considered as to whether a vessel can enter the navigation channel,” the spokesperson said.
“On that basis, we took the decision in consultation with NorthLink Ferries to delay the entry of the Hjaltland until conditions allowed.”
However, according to NorthLink the port was closed to all traffic.
The company told Shetland News: “Due to the fog (…), the Port of Aberdeen was closed to all traffic.
“The Hjaltland stood off waiting for visibility to improve before permission was later given to enter with the vessel arriving on her berth at 1232hrs.”
